It was announced yesterday via MediaBistro that rock goddess and National Book Award winning author Patti Smith with be helping adapt her amazing memoir Just Kids (my Favor!te book of 2010) for the screen alongside screenwriter and Tony Award winning playwright John Logan.
If you haven’t heard (I can’t see how you haven’t), Just Kids is Smith’s memoir of arriving in New York in 1967 and the then 20 year old’s chance encounter with Robert Mapplethorpe, another 20 year old aspiring artist. It’s her story of their love, their friendship, their art and a New York few would recognize today.
So the question goes out… who would you cast as Smith and Mapplethorpe?
Kristen Stewart (age: 21) and Robert Pattison (age: 25)
Surely these two will be at the top of studio exec’s wish list. Stewart, proved that she could rock in her transformation into Joan Jett in the film biopic The Runaways and the resemblance between the two [rumored] real-life couple to the originals is uncanny. But the fit and the two megastars’ ties to the mega-Twilight-franchise may not hit audiences (or Ms. Smith) the right way.
Frances Bean Cobain (age: 19) and Ezra Miller (age: 18)
The Princess of Grunge as the Godmother of Punk? Can Miss Cobain act? Who knows? But if she can – and would want to step up into the Hollywood world, the photos by Hedi Slimane that recently were released prove she has the look – and the balls – to play Smith. I’d cast the currently almost famous Ezra Miller as Mapplethorpe against Cobain’s Smith. He has the East Village circa 1967 thing down already – and if his performance in the upcoming We Need to Talk About Kevinis as amazing as is being predicted, this could be the massive follow-up he will be looking for.
Emma Watson (age: 21) and Nicholas Hout (age: 21)
Former Harry Potter student Emma Watson seems poised for an image-crashing turn in to catapult her out of Hogwarts. I’d pair her with fellow Brit Nicholas Hout, who came to fame years ago in About a Boy and crashed his own child-star image in the amazing British take on Gossip Girl (but dirtier and better) Skins. His follow-up to that, playing the lovelorn college boy pining for a night with professor Colin Firth in Tom Ford’s A Single Man.
Jennifer Damiano (age: 20) and Eddie Redmayne (age: 29)
Perhaps the modern day Smith and Mapplethorpe might be found forty blocks north of The Village and on Broadway. Jennifer Damiano got amazing attention for her originating role in Spring Awakening. Followed by her Tony-nominated role in Next to Normal. Currently she’s starring in Spider Man. So she should be looking for a new job soon. The Mapplethorpe to Damiano’s Smith? Eddie Redmayne, the Tony award-winning star of Red and the upcoming film My Week with Marilyn.
So who do you think should be cast as Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe in Just Kids?
If you don’t know what The Hunger Games is then you should know that this is definitely a bandwagon worth hopping on. Those dealing with “P.P.D.” (Post Potter Depression) can look forward to a new series that could be the next Harry Potter. Though these two series are vastly different, the underground fan following of Suzanne Collins’ book trilogy The Hunger Games is much larger than anyone has yet to see.
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.
Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister’s place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
Now that Lionsgate has announced the movie to be released March 23, 2012 it has sent the fans into a frenzy and thirsting for more. Jennifer Lawrence, who recently played Raven/Mystique on the big screens X-Men: First Class, has been announced as the beloved heroine, Katniss Everdeen, for the Hunger Games movie. Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth have also been added to the casting list as the fans favorites Peeta (Hutcherson) and Gale (Hemsworth).
Lawrence has my vote!
As we await the 200+ days until the movie arrives, check out the Official Hunger Games movie website to grab their HOT poster widget and movie countdown.
Things are going to start heating up really quick.
Enthusiasts around the world have shown their admiration in many different ways for the things they love most. However nothing seems as intense as permanently inking your body with symbols or designs honoring your favorite sport, movie, celebrity, hobby, etc. Some call it crazy, some call it awesome, and some call it just-plain-idiotic. Whatever label you put on it, it is what it is; “fan”atical tattoos.
The history of tattoos goes back thousands of years. Though how this artistic trend came about is hazy, the evolution of the tattoo is sometimes extreme. So to honor the crazy, the awesome, and the just-plain-idiotic (you can decide for yourself) enjoy this collection of “fan”actical tattoos.
You can never go wrong with snark and trivia games. That’s why I was so glad to see the modern classic You Don’t Know Jack available again for the 21st century! “The irreverent trivia party game,” YDKJ originally came out in 1995 for the PC and was a hit because of its sarcastic host and cleverly-worded questions. (If you choose to skip the directions, host Cookie Masterson defensively quips, “I’m sorry, was I talking too much?”) They’ve kept both the host and the witty writing, and updated the questions for today’s Gaga-riffic world.
These questions cover stuff you learned in school at some point, as well as things you pick up from modern pop culture, making it hipper than Jeopardy and less obscure than Trivial Pursuit. For instance:
In addition to the standard multiple choice question format, there’s “Dis or Dat”, where you distinguish a Tweet from Taylor Swift from one by the Dalai Lama (“Others have the right to happiness, just like yourself”; “Japan is amazing”), or the title of a film by the Three Stooges from one by porn star Jenna Jameson (“Rockin’ in the Rockies”; “4 for Texas”). Is the Crypts of Lieberkuhn a body part–or a Harry Potter location?
(Answer: body part.)
The game’s available for the major home gaming consoles, as well as in a scaled-down iOS version. Try the free lite version for your iPhone and try not to burst out laughing in public.
And if you’re feeling generous, YDKJ would appreciate your rating it in the App Store:
The headlines about Daniel Radcliffe’s GQ interview (upcoming in their August edition) are all about his decision to stop drinking, but I had a different takeaway. Check it out:
“I’d just rather sit at home and read, or talk to somebody that makes me laugh,” [Radcliffe] added. “There’s no shame in enjoying the quiet life.” (from Yahoo’s OMG! blog, full post here)
Turns out Radcliffe isn’t the only celeb who’s a fan of this “reading” thing. In fact, my favorite new tumblr, appropriately titled Awesome People Reading, is dedicated to photos of, well, you know. A few of the best:

About Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2:
Opening Date: July 15, 2011. Rated: PG-13. The end begins as Harry, Ron, and Hermione go back to Hogwarts to find and destroy Voldemort’s final horcruxes, but when Voldemort finds out about their mission, the biggest battle begins and life as they know it will never be the same again.
Since 1997, when thousands became enchanted on a search for a Sorcerer’s Stone, to 2010, when millions followed the beginning of an adventure throughout the wizard world to find hidden horcruxes, Harry Potter has been a billion dollar hit for author J.K. Rowling. The adventure finally concludes, with the second half of The Deathly Hallows, on June 15th… or so we thought.
A few weeks ago, Rowling posted a video on Youtube, a website called pottermore.com, as well as a twitter account for the new mysterious site. They all had owls standing on a sign that read ‘coming soon…’ and fans waited for her to release the mystery project that she has been working on.
I grew up with Harry Potter and to me, this was the end of an era. Between reading the books in a day when they were first released, to being so excited to be “old enough” in my mom’s eyes to go to the midnight release of the 4th book, and secretly wishing for my own letter from Hogwarts, I grew up with Harry, Herminone, and Ron, much like many people my age did. This final movie was known to be the end of it for all of us… until “Pottermore” appeared and left questions of what Rowling was planning.
Today, ‘soon’ arrived and J.K. Rowling revealed the project through a video on Youtube. Pottermore.com, opening to fans in October, is a virtual world of Harry Potter. Those interested can create their own character, get a wand, and be placed in a House at Hogwarts, something people have longed to be able to do for 14 years now. Rowling has written new material not included in the books for the site about characters and locations well known to fans of the Potter series. In addition, she will be releasing the seven books in the e-book format, only on her website, for the first time.
While I have been a fan of the series for most of my life, I’m not going to be running to sign up to play in a virtual Harry Potter world. However, I am glad that she is releasing this site as a way for more children to become as involved in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter as I have!
Movie tickets are now available for the final segment of the Harry Potter series. This is the movie fans have been waiting for, for over 13 years and it is officially a month away today. The excitement has been buzzing on Facebook and Twitter as more movie posters are revealed baring the date known around the world; 7/15.
With this being the last movie, fans who have been around since its birth in 1997 (or 1998 for the US), seem to find this a bitter sweet moment. For so many years there has always been “the next movie” to look forward to but after this, that is it. Will the franchise continue to live on or will the fans move on to the next “big thing”?
These are the books that I grew up with; literally, I was 11 years old when I first started reading them. I would like to think that fans would keep a warm place for this amazing series in their hearts as we all move on with our lives.
I’ve called the upcoming Harry Potter finale “epic,” but this new clip from Warner Bros. starts off just plain cute! It’s the first screen test of the main trio–Daniel Radcliffe as Harry, Emma Watson as Hermione, and Rupert Grint as Ron–circa early 2000 by my estimates, followed by promotional and behind-the-scenes footage (Voldemort/Ralph Fiennes with a nose!). Check it out below (there’s better quality video on Apple):
As the movies wrap up, hopefully we’ll continue to see more fan-created projects that spin off from J.K. Rowling’s world, like the Battle of Hogwarts faux documentary that “sets out to interview Former Students of the legendary school about the fateful battle that occurred there 20 years ago.” It’ll be released on YouTube in the next few weeks. Check out the Facebook page and the trailer below:
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part II, the eighth and final movie of the series, promises to be something EPIC. Check out some of the new posters below–I’m especially pleased to see some previously unsung heroes getting their solo poster due. Like Neville! In the books, he’s such a great character: it’s a shame that the movies had to gloss over his story, but here’s to hoping that he gets his props in this last movie. Check out the trailer here, and thanks to MuggleNet.com for the images.

for a moment. The Telegraph is reporting that actor and downright nice guy (cause, you know, we’re friends) Daniel Radcliffe will have a nude scene in the upcoming Harry Potter andhis Deadly Member the Deathly Hallows.
The article quotes the film’s director, David Yates, “Dan has appeared nude in the past. There are a couple of scenes in the new film in which he will undress, but we’re still thinking about how to present it.”
I don’t suggest taking a lesson from the newly minted almost-nude former future son-in-law of Sarah Palin, Levi Johnston. His recent Playgirlphoto spread was, while thrilling, a bit of a let down.
oh levi ...
This will be nothing new for Mr. Radcliffe who went full frontal (and dorsal for that matter) 8 times a week, both on Broadway and in London’s West End in Equus. He also has a book coming out at the end of the year. In it, he allows photographer Tim Hailand to follow him for a day — all day — including a trip to the shower. Good form, Daniel; I like where you’re going with this.
Radcliffe in Equus
My only request is that this not be a publicity stunt, like Levi’s. All talk and no Potter.
What’s the next stop on the Hogwarts Express Train? The Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park, of course!

Looks like they have come one step closer to making the Harry Potter world come alive for reals. While we wait for spring 2010, let’s decide what we’re most excited about. I’ll go first.
My ideal day in the park:
First, I would run to Ollivanders and pick up my personalized wand (in case of magical emergencies during the rest of my visit), then hit up the Forbidden Journey and Dragon Challenge for some action-packed adventure. Then, I would refuel with some British grub from the Three Broomsticks and a Butterbeer from the Hog’s Head Pub. To top it off, I would do some satisfying shopping at Zonko’s and Filch’s Emporium of Confiscated Goods. Sounds like a perfect Potter day to me!
What would you do at the park?
