Happy National Kissing Day

Kiss: to express a thought, feeling, love, passion, etc., by a contact of the lips.

Today is National Kissing Day (or International Kissing Day) so grab someone and lay a big smackeroo on them. It is said to be originally started in the United Kingdom however it was quickly adopted by the rest of the world because, hey, who doesn’t love a good smooch on the lips? Let us appreciate the intimacy we get from a good kiss and not take one for granted by participating in this treasured day for years to come.

Take this as a reminder, or perhaps a warning to some of you, that kissing will be occurring and it may happen to you.

In the mean time enjoy this collection of famous kisses from the past.

“A kiss can be a comma, a question mark or an exclamation point.

That’s basic spelling that every woman ought to know.”

Mistinguett (Jeanne Bourgeois), Theatre Arts, December 1955

“A kiss is a lovely trick designed by nature to stop speech when words become superfluous.”

Ingrid Bergman

Bridesmaids have more fun.

This weekend movie theatres were packed with people eager to see the hysterical, ridiculously funny, female take on The Hangover, known as Bridesmaids. Without using the phrase “Always a bridesmaid, never a bride” [which I guess I just used]… below are some of our favorite film bridesmaids…

Ruth Hussey was nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of “last-minute” bridesmaid Elizabeth Imbrie to Katharine Hepburn’s Tracy Lord in The Philadelphia Story.

Cameron Diaz could have picked a better choice of bridesmaid than Julia Roberts in My Best Friend’s Wedding.

Molly Ringwald’s List of Best Iconic Hairstyles in Film

The fantastic Molly Ringwald, one of the most recognizable stars out there, as much for her movies as for her fiery red hair, tells us the best iconic hairstyles in film.

Jean Seberg in Breathless:   What else is there to say about this look that hasn’t been said.  An eternal classic.

Catherine Deneuve in Belle de Jour:  In a lot of ways, Deneuve is the French version of Hitchcock’s classic blond ice queen.  Hair back in a twist until she’s ravished, and then it’s down.  Hard to argue with this one.

Brigitte Bardot in And God Created Woman:  Best example of boyfriend hair there is.  Almost impossible to achieve this look without hair extensions.

Pam Grier in Foxy Brown:  There is no statement quite like Pam’s hot powerful Afro.  White people tried to jump on the bandwagon in the seventies, but if you don’t have the hair or the attitude, don’t bother.

Faye Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde: Long sleek bob, beret optional.

Rita Hayworth in Gilda:  Even in black and white you can tell this lady is a redhead.  She sports the same peekaboo hairstyle that Veronica Lake made famous, but Rita’s looks undone and far sexier.

Yvonne Elliman in Jesus Christ Superstar:  Sexy, long-layered, hippie, windswept, razor cut.

Louise Brooks in everything:  The inspiration for everything from Something Wild to Pulp Fiction.

Molly Ringwald’s Top 10 Tips for the Perfect Dinner Party

I love dinner parties more than any other kind of party.   I love going to them, and I love giving them.  I don’t think there is any steadfast rule about the right way to give a party, although there are a few guidelines I have gleaned from experience.

  1. Make sure that your guests can eat what you prepare.
  2. Prepare everything that you can the night before.
  3. Allow enough time to get yourself together before your guests arrive.
  4. Politely decline when asked “is there anything I can do to help?”.
  5. Choose your soundtrack wisely.
  6. Keep the meal simple.
  7. Bag the buffet.
  8. Size it right.
  9. Don’t worry about everything matching perfectly.
  10. Make sure that you have enough wine to last.

1) JEANS: “The best thing to do is determine your body type and match the jeans accordingly.”

2) BLACK CASHMERE TURTLENECK: “A black turtleneck looks chic under a trench (a favorite combination of mine – very Yves Saint Laurent) and can also dress down beautifully under a casual jean jacket.”

4) WRAPAROUND DRESS: “It’s nice to have one dress that you can wear no matter what and still feel beautiful and sexy.”

A “Pretty” Cool Night With Molly Ringwald

Molly Ringwald 001
An enthusiastic crowd of moms, dads, and teenage girls gathered last night at Bookends bookstore in Ridgewood, NJ, to hear Molly Ringwald read from her new book, GETTING THE PRETTY BACK: Friendship, Family, and Finding the Perfect Lipstick. For those of you who missed it, here are some fun things we learned about the actress during the Q&A, and from hanging out with her this week in NYC:
***
  • An avid reader, one of Molly’s favorite authors is J.D Salinger. In fact, GETTING THE PRETTY BACK is divided into nine chapters as a nod to Salinger’s Nine Stories.
  • John Hughes movies aside, one of Molly’s favorite movies to work on was The Tempest, which she starred in when she was just 13 years-old.
  • With her jazz album finally completed and set to release in the fall, Molly hopes to one day master the ukulele.
  • Chelsea Handler’s first book, My Horizontal Life, was edited by Molly’s husband, Panio Gianopoulos. Panio and Chelsea will get a chance to reunite when he accompanies Molly to her appearance on Chelsea Lately on Monday, May 3rd. Tune in!
  • Molly calls her writer husband Panio, “the master of transitional sentences”.
  • Does Molly still wear pink? Absolutely! In fact, the actress sported bright pink socks beneath her metallic silver heels last night at her signing.

Below, check out pics of Molly’s pink socks, her spirited fans, and more!

Molly Ringwald Getting the Pretty Back

Buy Getting the Pretty Back today at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders or an independent bookseller.

To her millions of fans, Molly Ringwald will forever be sixteen. As the endearing and witty star of the beloved John Hughes classics Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Pretty in Pink, Molly defined teenage angst, love, and heartbreak. While remembered eternally as the enviable high school princess Claire, or the shy, vulnerable Samantha, Molly has just celebrated her fortieth birthday. Facing a completely new, angst-inducing time in her life, she is embracing being a woman, wife, mother of three, actress, and best friend with her trademark style, candor, and humor.

In Getting the Pretty Back, Molly encourages every woman to become “the sexiest, funniest, smartest, best-dressed, and most confident woman that you can be.” She shares personal anecdotes and entertaining insights about the struggle to get through the murky milestones and identity issues that crop up long after the prom ends. Whether she’s discussing sex and beauty, personal style, travel and entertaining, motherhood, or friendship, Molly embodies the spirit of being fabulous at every age, and reminds us all that prettiness is a state of mind: it’s “the part of you that knows what you really want, that takes risks.”

Lavishly illustrated by Ruben Toledo, Getting the Pretty Back is sure to charm women of all ages with Molly’s unforgettably personal, refreshingly outspoken take on life, love, and, of course, finding that perfect red lipstick.

Mourning the Loss of ’80s Teen Flick Director John Hughes

brat pack

A few moments ago, the Los Angeles Times confirmed that John Hughes died of a heart attack earlier today while on a morning walk in New York City. In addition to directing the much loved films “Sixteen Candles,” “The Breakfast Club,” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” he made a star of teen idol Molly Ringwald, who was in the first two.

In middle school, I don’t think I ever went more than a month without watching one of Hughes’ movies. Today, I mourn the loss of this brilliant filmmaker, a sentiment that, ironically, validates the despicable Mr. Rooney’s line in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off:” “Between grief and nothing… I’ll take grief.”
