COVET: What I Want Right Now
At brunch yesterday I spotted my friend Jackie wearing the most adorable classic black flats. But they had a twist: a plastic PVC upper and three buckle straps snaking up the ankle. She told me they were part of the Vivienne Westwood + Melissa collaboration and that there were more styles online. Of course, I had to find out more!

The inspiration
Turns out these cool plastic shoes come in multiple styles and colors. There is an attractive heeled version of the flats:
And a fun buttoned ankle boot:

Not to mention tons of kitschy peep-toe heels for summer:

The best part is that these shoes are very well-priced, ranging from $85 to $200, especially if you find them on Zappos.com.
What do you think, will you pick up a pair of these “rain chic” shoes?
Written in indelible Ink
In case you haven’t noticed, we have a thing for books, and for tattoos. We just had to share this great video featuring THE WORD MADE FLESH: Literary Tattoos from Bookworms Worldwide by Eva Talmadge and Justin Taylor. Just released by our friends at Harper Perennial, this book is a beautifully packaged full-color collection of literary tattoos and short personal essays.
An Empire State of Heels
I was walking along 34th street this weekend when I was literally stopped in my tracks by the sequined heels on display in the Geox store window. I thought to myself: “Are those heels in the shape of the Empire State Building???” Indeed they were! Check out the window display below:

I simply had to find out more! After some sleuthing online, I found out I had been looking at the Geox limited edition Empire State Building heels, conveniently for sale right next to the iconic skyscraper itself.
Available in gold or silver, the 5-inch heels are covered with rhinestones to represent the skyscraper windows. The body of the shoe comes in leopard print, purple and blue sequins, or black sequins, and a choice of open or closed-toe.

With a price tag of $230, tourists may not wish to forsake their standard I <3 NY t-shirts for the heels, but they are certainly the most fashionable New York City keepsake I have seen in a while.
Don’t they just put you in an “Empire State of Mind“?

To her millions of fans, Molly Ringwald will forever be sixteen. While remembered eternally as the enviable high school princess Claire, or the shy, vulnerable Samantha, Molly has just celebrated her fortieth birthday. Facing a completely new, angst-inducing time in her life, she is embracing being a woman, wife, mother of three, actress, and best friend with her trademark style, candor, and humor.
In Getting the Pretty Back, Molly encourages every woman to become “the sexiest, funniest, smartest, best-dressed, and most confident woman that you can be.” She shares personal anecdotes and entertaining insights about the struggle to get through the murky milestones and identity issues that crop up long after the prom ends. Whether she’s discussing sex and beauty, personal style, travel and entertaining, motherhood, or friendship, Molly embodies the spirit of being fabulous at every age, and reminds us all that prettiness is a state of mind: it’s “the part of you that knows what you really want, that takes risks.”

The (Mc)Queen Continues to Reign
While you might have had the chance to look over the exquisite clothes in Alexander McQueen’s final collection for Fall 2010–did you get a close-up of his accessories? As Nitrolicious points out, the shoes and bags in this collection are utterly breathtaking and prove once-again that the late designer was truly a genius. (Read a tribute to the designer by YIL’s Carrie).
Looking at the photos below, it’s hard to pick a favorite, but the wing-embroidered platform sandal below might be it for me:
These are also equally amazing:
What about you? Which accessories are your favorite???
Long Live McQueen

The world lost an incredible talent yesterday, when Lee Alexander McQueen died.
Alexander McQueen was a true visionary and his talent captured a spirit rarely seen. Like a poet, he wove patterns and fabrics to create music. Like a musician, he played with length, fit and edges to create, well, poetry. I was – and will always be – a big fan. He had style,
wit, attitude. A post-punk f-you British attitude.
My first McQueen purchase were these incredibly ridiculous Skull shoes that I bought on the eve of Sebastian Horsley’s London book party in Fall of 2007. I remember walking into the incredible Bond Street store and knowing I’d walk out with something. I didn’t exactly just walk out, mind you. I walked out a full 5 inches taller.
McQueen was an artist. And like all true artists, he didn’t bend and was true to his vision of what fashion is, was and could be. He pushed it. Skulls became fashionable, shoes unwearable.
That’s the thing with art. There’s a mark left. An intangible impression.
I’ll miss you Lee Alexander McQueen. We all will.
Carrie is back!
Filming for the 2nd Sex and the City movie started yesterday in NYC. Some photos of Carrie on the set have already surfaced. Check out those shoes! Fabulous? Or…not? Even for Carrie, these could be a stretch. Leave your thoughts!
